Why blame Batman at the end of Dark Knight and not someone else?

At the end of Dark Knight Gordon, in order to preserve Dent's image, blame's Batman for Dent's crimes and his death. I understand why Dent's image as a hero needed to be preserved, but why blame Batman instead of one of the hundreds of other criminals running around Gotham? The city is in the middle of a huge crime wave, after all.Why blame Batman at the end of Dark Knight and not someone else?
Because Batman is willing to accept the blame. If they tried to pin the crimes on some criminal, then that criminal could deny it. They could get a lawyer and try to prove their innocence thus resulting in a real investigation that could lead back to Dent.



Also, Gordon is not corrupt. If he were to frame some criminal for these crimes he would be going against his nature and all that he's fought for.



And, finally, this sets the stage for the third movie.

Why blame Batman at the end of Dark Knight and not someone else?
Good question. Remember, however, that this IS a movie, and it's one with clear "good guys," in the classical sense. Having them do this, from a story perspective, makes them as bad as the people they're fighting. Also, the characters themselves are the type who would only do this sort of thing with the "criminal's" consent, and only under dire circumstances. Batman willingly took the blame, and Gordon feared the city's spirit would be broken (which is where the "the Joker can't win" comment came from). Also, it's unexpected, so it forces the audience to think about what's happening. I understand why they did it, but cannot condone it, nonetheless. Dent had arguably gone insane, and couldn't realize what the consequences would be in his pain, and wouldn't have cared if he had. But that doesn't mean that you should cover up five murders. This isn't him jay-walking, and it's not a one-time happening. The best you could do is keep the media away from it. The city needs to be able to trust them, and this sort of lie is always wrong, no matter what.
Gordon doesn't blame Batman. Batman insists on taking the responsibility himself. If the truth about Dent's murders would come clear than it would not only cause all charges he made to drop but also it would end Gotham's last hope in a decent system of justice and authorities.



Batman takes the blame on himself not only because he can take it, but also because he partly feels responsible in Dent's hardening. He blames himself for what happened to Dent and Rachel as he also confronts Alfred about it.



Batman doesn't need approval. He doesn't need supporters or to be supported.He will keep his duty with or without the public on his side. That's why he takes it on himself. Because being hunted is not a big problem for him. He can take it.



Also Bruce Wayne has a very strong sense of duty and justice. Although his sub-ego sometimes distracts it. It would be impossible for him to blame someone else for a crime he did not commit, no matter how bad a person or criminal that person would be.Why blame Batman at the end of Dark Knight and not someone else?
This goes down because that's the only way he can prove himself to be a man of questionable methods...he doesn't kill...so he took advantage of someone elses. Besides, the guys in shock. Gordon's got a great big mess on his hands.



His guy took out everyone. He killed off the first wave of petty crime, then the second wave of mafia family crime. And in the vaccum comes the third wave. That wonderfully primary colored freakshow that will cause a lifetime of grief from which he will never recover.
